The Steampunk movement has been fueled by the communications infrastructure of the Internet. Prior to online communications, such a movement would’ve been limited by geography or slow communications vehicles such as snail mail newsletters.

Imagining an alternate future where steam is the primary source of power, it is also a cousin of sorts to the online practice of mashups: Taking two disparate pieces of content and mashing them up to create a unique third. Found at YouTube from PBS.

Trends that previously would’ve taken a very long time to percolate up to the mainstream attention are now identified quickly through online communication and incorporated into popular culture, such as this example of a steampunk in the noir vampire fantasy, Perfect Creature.
